ENERGYOil Prices Whipsaw as Hormuz Disruption Deepens Amid Renewed US-Iran Strikes
Brent crude surged more than 4% past $79/barrel this week after a fourth wave of US strikes on Iran and Iranian retaliatory attacks on US-linked sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan. Strait of Hormuz throughput remains near 3.8 million barrels per day, versus a pre-war baseline of 20–21 million, with global output still roughly 9.4 million barrels per day short. The June 18 US-Iran ceasefire memorandum intended to reopen the strait appears to be unraveling. For clients with Gulf energy exposure, this signals that chokepoint risk premiums, insurance costs, and freight rerouting are likely to persist well into Q3, complicating regional supply planning.
FOOD SECURITYFertilizer Costs Climb as Phosphate Supply Chains Absorb Hormuz Shock
Fertilizer markets are absorbing a second-order shock from the Hormuz disruption: diammonium phosphate (DAP) prices rose 5% in June to $658.30/tonne, and phosphate values are up roughly 10% since spring, even as urea has fallen sharply from its April peak. The World Bank now projects fertilizer prices will climb more than 30% on average over 2026 if the disruption persists, driven by lost Saudi phosphate exports and halted ammonia shipments from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Iran. For MENA food security programming, tighter and costlier fertilizer supply threatens planting-season input costs just as regional food insecurity sits at a historic high, raising the stakes for agrifood resilience investment.
CRITICAL MINERALSDRC Tightens Cobalt Quotas as Glencore Weighs $9B Orion Stake Sale
The DRC has capped 2026–2027 cobalt exports at 96,600 metric tons annually, with 87,000 tons allocated pro-rata to commercial miners and 9,600 tons reserved for the state stockpile. Glencore’s allocation of 22,800 tons sits well below its Q1 output pace, forcing in-country stockpiling. Simultaneously, Glencore is negotiating the sale of a 40% stake in its Kamoto and Mutanda mines to the US-backed Orion Critical Mineral Consortium, in a deal valuing the assets near $9 billion and granting Orion board seats and offtake rights. Together, the quota regime and the Orion stake sale mark a structural shift toward US-aligned control over DRC cobalt supply chains — a dynamic battery and EV-linked clients should monitor closely.
FINANCE & DEALSPIF Confirms Full Deployment of $9B Green Bond Proceeds
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has confirmed full allocation of its $9 billion green bond proceeds across 91 environmental projects spanning renewable energy, green buildings, energy efficiency, and water management, per its newly published third Allocation and Impact Report. The portfolio is projected to deliver 427 megawatts of renewable capacity and avoid 5.1 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions. The disclosure lands alongside a broader wave of Gulf sovereign wealth fund infrastructure deployment, reinforcing PIF’s position as a pioneer among SWFs in green bond issuance since 2022. For finance-sector clients, this signals continued Gulf capital appetite for sustainability-linked infrastructure even amid regional energy volatility.
POLICY/GEOPOLITICSWorld Bank Warns MENA Food Insecurity at Historic High, Urges $12B Investment Push
The World Bank released “Building Food Security, Creating Jobs,” a new report covering the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, finding that 18% of the region’s population now faces food insecurity — a historic high — while 42% cannot afford a nutritious diet. The report calls for $12 billion in additional annual investment in water-efficient irrigation and agricultural innovation, projecting this could more than double fruit and vegetable output and raise cereal yields 72% by 2050, while creating 5 million jobs. Agriculture already consumes 87% of water use in the world’s most water-stressed region. The findings sharpen the policy case for water-smart agrifood investment across MENA engagements.
