Daily intelligence across Geneva CSR’s practice areas: energy, food security, critical minerals, finance, and policy.
GEOPOLITICSStrait of Hormuz Tensions Persist Despite US-Iran Truce
Attacks on Saudi- and Qatari-flagged tankers have continued in the Strait of Hormuz despite the US-Iran truce announced last week, with Iranian naval forces reportedly demanding transit fees from commercial vessels as a condition of safe passage. Shipping volumes are nonetheless recovering, with 258 vessels transiting the strait this week versus 138 the week prior, suggesting operators are cautiously testing the truce’s durability. For Geneva CSR’s MENA-facing clients, the gap between formal de-escalation and operational risk on the ground remains wide: insurers and shippers are pricing in continued disruption even as diplomatic channels report progress. We continue to advise clients with Gulf logistics exposure to maintain contingency routing and monitor transit fee developments closely.
ENERGYOPEC+ Approves Fifth Consecutive Monthly Output Increase
OPEC+ has approved a 188 kb/d production increase for August, marking the fifth consecutive monthly increase as the group continues unwinding earlier voluntary cuts. Oil prices are settling back near pre-war levels as Hormuz-linked export flows recover, easing the acute supply anxiety that drove earlier price spikes. The sustained pace of output increases signals producer confidence that regional shipping risk is manageable in the near term, though it leaves less spare capacity buffer should Hormuz disruptions escalate. For clients in MENA energy strategy, this combination of rising supply and lingering transit risk argues for hedging structures that account for both downside price pressure and tail-risk supply shocks.
FOOD SECURITYWorld Bank Calls for $12B/Year MENA Irrigation Investment
A World Bank report released in late June calls for approximately $12 billion in annual irrigation investment across MENA to address chronic water stress and shore up regional food security. The recommendation lands amid a fresh surge in fertilizer prices, driven by Hormuz-linked supply chain disruption affecting ammonia and urea shipments through the Gulf. The combination of rising input costs and underinvested irrigation infrastructure compounds near-term food security risk for import-dependent states. This reinforces the case for blended-finance irrigation vehicles that Geneva CSR’s food security practice has been advising on, particularly structures that can absorb input-price volatility while unlocking long-horizon infrastructure capital.
CRITICAL MINERALSJordan’s JPMC Strikes Phosphoric Acid Deal at Premium Pricing
Jordan Phosphate Mines Company has signed a phosphoric acid supply agreement with an Indian buyer at $1,700 per tonne P2O5, up $340 per tonne quarter-on-quarter, reflecting tightening global supply and robust fertilizer demand. Morocco’s benchmark phosphate rock price is holding near $150 per tonne, suggesting the premium is concentrated in processed phosphoric acid rather than raw rock. For Jordan’s mining fiscal design work, the widening spread between rock and processed-product pricing strengthens the case for royalty and tax structures that capture value at the processing stage rather than extraction alone, an area where Geneva CSR has been advising Jordanian counterparts.
FINANCE & DEALSSaudi PIF Fully Allocates $9B in Green Bond Proceeds
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has confirmed full allocation of $9 billion in green bond proceeds, part of a broader wave of GCC sovereign wealth activity that saw regional funds lead $55 billion in global dealmaking this period. The full deployment signals continued institutional appetite for green-labeled sovereign issuance and reinforces GCC funds’ role as anchor investors in climate-aligned infrastructure. For Geneva CSR’s DFI and green finance advisory work, the pace of allocation is a useful benchmark for structuring future green bond mandates and demonstrates sustained sovereign demand for credible, well-documented use-of-proceeds frameworks.
