ENERGYUAE Launches One of the World’s Largest Solar-Storage Complexes
Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) have broken ground on a 5.2 GW solar park integrated with 19 GWh of battery storage — one of the largest combined renewable and storage projects globally. The facility is designed to deliver baseload clean power, substantially reducing reliance on gas-fired generation in the UAE’s electricity mix. This milestone reflects a broader MENA trend: solar PV capacity across the region surged 44% in 2025 to 43.7 GW, driven by record-low auction prices of 1.09 US cents per kWh. For investors and project developers, the UAE continues to set the benchmark for utility-scale renewable buildouts in the Gulf.
FOOD SECURITYWheat Prices Surge as Middle East Tensions Disrupt Shipping
Chicago wheat futures jumped as much as 5.1% on March 6 — the largest single-day spike since May 2024 — as grain markets tracked a surge in crude prices amid widening Middle East conflict. Reports of partial disruption to Strait of Hormuz shipping routes raised fears over fertilizer and food commodity transit, compounding an already elevated FAO Food Price Index (125.3 points in February 2026, up 0.9% month-on-month). Input costs for farmers remain approximately 18% above five-year averages. Saudi Arabia and Tunisia have responded by increasing wheat import volumes to buffer domestic supply risks — a pattern Geneva CSR monitors closely given MENA’s structural import dependence.
CRITICAL MINERALSU.S. Hosts 54-Nation Ministerial, Secures DRC Cobalt and Copper Access
Secretary of State Marco Rubio convened the 2026 Critical Minerals Ministerial with representatives from 54 countries and the European Commission, signalling intensifying geopolitical competition over supply chains. A key outcome was the signing of an MOU between Glencore and the U.S.-backed Orion Critical Mineral Consortium for potential acquisition of DRC assets — targeting copper and cobalt flows to the United States. The U.S. EXIM Bank has issued $14.8 billion in Letters of Interest for minerals projects over the past year. For MENA actors, particularly Morocco (phosphates) and Gulf SWFs investing in African mining assets, this ministerial accelerates the strategic framing of critical minerals as a national security and economic diversification imperative.
FINANCE & DEALSQatar’s $29.7B Egypt Investment Package Eases Cairo’s Financing Pressure
A long-term $29.7 billion investment agreement between Qatar and Egypt is expected to significantly ease Egypt’s external financing constraints heading into 2026, alongside anticipated IMF review approvals. Qatar’s Public Investment mandate in Egypt spans infrastructure, real estate, and energy — reinforcing Gulf capital’s role as a stabilising force in regional sovereign credit markets. Separately, Saudi Arabia’s PIF issued its first euro-denominated green bond in October 2025 (€1.6 billion dual-tranche), and MENA state-owned investors deployed $56.3 billion across 97 deals in the first nine months of 2025. Gulf SWFs are increasingly positioning green infrastructure and critical minerals as core long-horizon portfolio allocations.
GEOPOLITICS / POLICYQatar’s North Field Expansion Reshapes Global LNG Architecture
Qatar’s North Field expansion is on track to begin LNG production in the second half of 2026, lifting national capacity from 77 Mt/yr to 126 Mt/yr — an 85% increase that will lock in supply security for Asian and European buyers well into the 2030s. This expansion arrives as Brent crude is forecast to average $55/barrel in Q1 2026 amid a projected 2 million bpd surplus, constraining OPEC’s ability to unwind production cuts. The supply glut is reshaping fiscal planning across MENA petrostates. Qatar’s LNG dominance, however, positions it as a structural beneficiary regardless of oil price softness — a distinction of growing importance for sovereign credit and infrastructure investment strategies in the region.
