ENERGYHormuz Crisis Triggers Largest Oil Supply Disruption in Market History

Brent crude surged to $94/bbl following US-Israeli air strikes on Iran launched on 28 February, effectively halting tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz — through which 20 mb/d of crude and oil products normally transit, representing ~25% of global seaborne trade. Gulf producers including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iraq, and Kuwait have cut output by at least 10 mb/d. On 11 March, the IEA activated its largest-ever emergency stock release of 400 million barrels. Analysts at Rystad Energy warn Brent could reach $135/bbl if the disruption persists four months, with severe fiscal and supply implications for MENA economies.

FOOD SECURITYOman and FAO Formalize 2026–2030 Food Security Cooperation Plan

Oman and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization signed a five-year cooperation framework in Muscat in early March, targeting improvements across food value chains, water-use efficiency, aquaculture, and climate-resilient agriculture. The deal reflects a broader GCC strategic pattern of de-risking food supply dependence — acutely relevant given current Strait of Hormuz disruptions affecting cargo flows. The agreement covers fisheries development, modern farm technology adoption, and livestock value-chain enhancement. For advisory firms operating in the MENA food security space, the pact signals growing institutional demand for integrated agri-investment mandates and domestic production capacity-building programmes.

CRITICAL MINERALSUS Hosts 54-Nation Critical Minerals Ministerial, Mobilizes $14.8B in Export Finance

The U.S. State Department convened the 2026 Critical Minerals Ministerial in Washington, bringing together 54 countries and the European Commission. EXIM Bank announced $14.8 billion in Letters of Interest spanning lithium, cobalt, and tin projects. A key MOU between Glencore and the US-backed Orion Consortium targeted DRC copper and cobalt assets, advancing the US-DRC Strategic Partnership. The event underscores Western urgency to counter China’s dominant position in critical mineral refining. Meanwhile, Morocco is advancing its battery materials strategy through a Sino-Moroccan NMC precursor joint venture with 120,000 t/yr capacity — a growing investment frontier for MENA advisory mandates.

FINANCE & DEALSAbu Dhabi Restructures $263B ADQ into New Strategic Vehicle L’IMAD

Abu Dhabi has consolidated sovereign fund ADQ — managing approximately $263 billion in assets — into a newly established investment vehicle, L’IMAD, targeting infrastructure, real estate, advanced industries, financial services, and urban mobility across domestic and international markets. ADQ’s portfolio includes Etihad Airways, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, and the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange. The restructuring reflects the UAE’s ongoing shift toward unified, professionally managed sovereign capital deployment — consistent with broader Gulf SWF evolution as MENA funds approach $8.8 trillion in combined assets by 2030.

GEOPOLITICS / POLICYQatar Declares LNG Force Majeure; North Field Expansion Remains on Track

Qatar declared force majeure on its LNG exports following Iranian drone strikes on gas infrastructure, disrupting approximately 20% of global LNG supply and pushing European and Asian gas spot prices sharply higher. Despite the immediate shock, Qatar’s long-term North Field expansion — set to lift LNG capacity from 77 to 126 mt/yr in H2 2026 — remains intact. The crisis reinforces the strategic premium on long-term supply agreements and export diversification. For Geneva CSR’s energy transition finance clients, the disruption simultaneously validates alternative LNG sourcing strategies and underscores the QIA’s capacity to sustain long-horizon investment through near-term volatility.
